THE second generation comuter (1959-1969)
Transistor replaced vacuum tubes and
ushered in the Second generation of computer.
the transistor was invented in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computer until
the late 50s.
the transistor was invented in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computer until
the late 50s.
The transistor was far superior to
the vacuum tube, allowing computers become smaller faster
,cheaper ,more energy -efficient and more reliable than their first generation predecessors
Though the transistor still generate a great deal of heat that subjected the computer to damage
it was a vast improvement over the vacuum tube . Second generation computer still relied
on punched cards for input and printouts for output.
Second generation computer moved from cryptic binary machine language to symbolic or
assembly , language , which allowed programmers to specify instruction in word .
High level programming languages were also being developed at this time . such as
early version of COBOL . and FORTRAN. These were also the first computer that store their
instruction in the memory , which moved from the magnetic drum to magnetic core technology.
The main feature of Second generation computer are:
1. use of transistor
2.reliable as compared to first generation computer
3.smaller size compare to first generation computer
4.generate less heat compare to first generation computer
5.consume less electricity compare to first generation computer
6.faster than the first generation computer
7.still very costly
8.A.C was needed
9.support machine language and assembly language
Some computer of this generation were:
1.IBM 1620
2.IBM7094
3.CDC3600
4.CDC 1604
5.UNIVAC 1108
